As you all know how passionate I am about travelling and exploring the wonderful world, but being a medical professional I often get asked many question specially by my patients, friends and followers about how can one travel safely with pre-existing medical conditions or what medical insurance are the best while traveling. First of all, just because you have a medical condition doesn’t mean you can’t travel or enjoy your life, but you do have to be well prepared. The fact is that most medical conditions can be managed but of course you have to do additional researching and planning when you are traveling.
With the right Medical / Travel Insurance and proper planning you can roam around the world and explore your favourite places regardless of weather you are an elderly, disabled or with almost any medical conditions. In this article I have covered all the important questions one should consider before traveling anywhere with your pre-existing medical conditions. Hope it helps in planing your next adventure Xx.
How can you keep yourself healthy while traveling?
When you are travelling, whether you have a pre-existing medical condition or not, it is important to keep yourself as healthy as possible. There are a few ways that you can strengthen your immune system, from making sure your diet is full of healthy and balanced food, to drinking lots of water and getting plenty of sleep. By doing these, you will help prevent any avoidable illnesses and stop any other conditions from getting worse.
What do you need to pack?
Aside from all the usual travel essentials, there are a few other items that are important to take with you when travelling with a medical condition. For example, make sure you have more than enough of any medications you may need, to account for any delays. Be sure to split it between your hand luggage and checked luggage to avoid anything being lost. Keep copies of all your medical paperwork, as well as lists of allergies, illnesses and medication, just in case you need to visit a doctor during your time travelling.
What insurance should you get?
No matter When or where you travel, Travel Insurance is the most important specially if you are having pre-existing medical condition as you don’t know when you’re going to need it and it’s much better to have it and not use it than need it and not have any. When you have a medical condition, it is even more important and although it might cost a little more, or be a little more difficult to find cover, it is crucial that you have the best insurance for you. Make sure you’re open and honest about your medical condition with the travel insurance provider, so you’re offered the right cover.
Where should you travel ?
There are likely to be a whole load of places across the world that you would love to visit, but when you have a medical condition, this might mean adapting your bucket list slightly. For example, if you have a Heart condition, you might want to avoid extremely hot weather, or anywhere too cold, as extremes of temperature can make the symptoms of your heart condition worse. Is there anything you can’t do?
Especially if your condition is newly-diagnosed, you might find yourself unsure of what you can and can’t do. For example, there are quite a lot of strict criteria for being able to do things such as bungee jumping or skydiving, so before you set your sights on something like that, be sure to check out whether you will be able to do it. By researching in advance, you will make it much easier for yourself.
Will there be the right food for you?
If your medical condition is affected by food, such as Type 1 diabetes, it is important to know that there is plenty of food choice for you. Research what food is readily available in restaurants, and be sure to take some snacks with you to ensure you always have something to hand.
How can you have the best time?
Just because you might need to consider some extra medical needs, doesn’t mean you can’t have an amazing time! You deserve to have an incredible adventure, wherever you end up, so as long as it won’t affect your condition, do everything you’ve always wanted to do. Grab the trip with both hands and enjoy yourself.
Once you have covered all of these bases, you should be ready to embark on your travel journey! As long as you are safe, you will have a fantastic time, and come home with so many stories to tell.
Good luck with your next travel adventure.
