Mexico was one of my bucket list destinations I managed to cross off in the end of 2018. Cancun and Tulum are the two of the most popular glistening beach destination of the Caribbean sea. They are both immensely gorgeous tropical heavens, and well known for their luxury, large selection of exotic palatial resorts, world class beaches and out of this world night life. Cancun is also billed as America and Canada’s ultimate spring break and wedding destination and there’s so much more to see and do in this amazing place on the Yucatan Peninsula. Some of the most popular attractions are visiting ancient ruin and seeing the amazing wonders of world, but experiences vary far and wide from soaking in the crystal clear beaches to swimming in the magical Mexican cenote, from feasting on delicious tacos to getting dancing your heart out in one of the wild night clubs in the city.
Here are the list of the things I did in my one week vacation in Cancun Mexico which might help you in planing your your first visit to Mexico xoxo.
Enjoy the endless Caribbean beaches:
It might seem obvious , but if you are visiting Cancun, one of the reasons you chose it was for its endless white sandy beaches, warm azure waters and the year-long tropical weather. Pure white sand beaches with an endless color of turquoise blue that in real life looks just like what you see on magazines covers. Playa Delfines, Playa Forum, Playa Caracol, Playa Chac Mool, Playa Tortuga and Playa Del Nino are some of the most popular beaches in Cancun. Beachgoers and sun tanners will have their fill but the conditions are also amazing for the thrill seekers as there is a lot you can do here such as the triumvirate of boating, parasailing, and jet skiing in addition to the calmer water sports such as paddle boarding and kayaking or even water fitness!
Visit Mayan ruines and Chichen Itza:
You can’t visit this region of Mexico and not see the famous Chchen Itza and learn about the ancient Mayan civilisation. The Mayan city is home to the famous pyramid ruins of Chichen Itza, it is both a UNESCO world heritage site and one of the New Seven Wonders of the World. These ancient Mayan ruins dates back to 7th century and I always find it amazing to see such an old and ancient monuments still in good condition and standing up to the test of time. I managed to click some amazing pictures with barely a soul in sight as I arrived early morning around 9. a.m. from Cancun, so make sure to go early as the area gets really crowded as the day goes on. P.S From Cancun it takes around 2 hours by road so plan accordingly.
Swim in a magical sink hole and Cenote:
Centoes are the other reason to book holidays to mexico as they are unique to this region only. Cenotes are magical sink holes and secret underground caverns formed when limestone caves in leaving a hole in the earth that leads to a turquoise colored water pool. Centoes are around 65 millions years old and formed when a meteor hit the earth causing the extinction of 75% of life on earth including dinosaurs. There are around 7000 cenotes in Yucatan peninsula but only few are open to the public for swimming and diving.Mayan believed them to be sacred and suggested that they were entrance to the underworld. Every cenote is different from one another in terms of size and look, and if you find one you can swim, dive or snorkel in, it is an unforgettable experience that I would highly recommend.
Relax at the resort:
Cancun is famous for its exotic resorts and there are many 5 star resorts with stretches of well maintained private white beaches, pool, spa, health club, and often with all inclusive restaurants and bars. We stayed at the Iberostar Paraiso Maya in Cancun, a 5 star all inclusive beach resort located at the shores of Quintana Roo.
Party the night away at Coco Bongo:
Cancun is often known as the party capital of the Mayan Riviera and as such it has a thriving night scene. Before visiting Mexico I heard a lot about the famous Coco bongo show at Playa Del carmen and trust me it was one of the most fun nights we had in Cancun.
COCO BONGO is live show like no other offering a variety of live performances ranging from music icons such as Queen, Madonna, Michael Jackon, and reenactments from Moulin Rouge, Grease and even Beetlejuice! It was a lively mix of western musicals with the eclectic feel of a Las Vegas show. I found it quite crowded and packed but it was worth the experience. The atmosphere and ambiance was amazing and it is definitely must visit to see how the Mexican party.
Sail through the Mexican gulf:
There’s no better way to explore the Caribbean sea than on deck of boat. Cruising the turquoise blue water and exploring the the coral reef and the immense its beauty of marine life on the Mexican coast was a one of a kind experience. We did a half day sailing tour on a 32 ft ctamaan with Cancun adventure where we swam, snorkeled and did some paddle boarding in a Mexican lagoon.
Visit Yal ku Lagoon in Akumal:
Akumal is small town 20 minutes south of Playa del Carmen where you can find the Yakul lagoon. The area is an inlet from the ocean and the salt and fresh water mix. The calm turquoise water are home to sea turtles, tropical fish and manta rays. This place is perfect for an afternoon of snorkeling and kayaking.
A day trip to Isla mujeres:
If you still have a time visit Isla mujeres. Isla Mujeres is a small island located 13 km off the coast of Cancun, Translated from Spanish Isla Mujeres means “island of women” and it was named after the Mayan goddess Ixchel (the goddess of fertility and happiness). If you want to have break from beaches of Cancun hop on a ferry and have a laid back day trip on the island of Isla Mujeres.
Feast on delicious Mexican food:
Last but not least and yes I am going to say it loud , eat all the tacos and guacamole you can while in Mexico. Overall I am a big fan of Mexican food and staying in an all inclusive Mexican resort has its own perks, and of course I literally tried so many types of tacos and numerous other delicious dishes in the Mexican cuisine repertoire.
